Choosing the Right Outfits to make you feel confident and comfortable

As a girl, sometimes choosing what to wear can be difficult. But choosing the right outfits will make a huge impact on the final appearance of your photos. Trust me when I say that the right outfit is NOT about what’s trending. Your outfit choices should instead be about what makes you feel good and how they reflect your personality. Remember, your senior photo session is about showcasing your unique story, not the latest fashion fads.
1. Remember that confidence is KEY!
The best outfits are the ones that make you feel both beautiful and comfortable, because when you feel good, confidence naturally shines through in your photos. Comfort allows your personality to glow with genuine smiles and effortless poses. Choose pieces that flatter your figure, reflect your style, and bring out the very best version of you.
I always recommend including pieces you truly love, like your favorite pair of sneakers, those go-to comfy jeans, or that shirt you wear whenever you want to add a little extra flair. Often, these items carry a story or memory of their own, which makes them the perfect way to highlight your personality and weave them into your unique story.
2. Don’t be afraid to mix things up.
Be sure to bring a variety of outfits to your senior photo session! Think one dressy, one casual, and maybe something in between. Mixing it up not only gives you different looks to choose from but also helps showcase the many sides of your personality, adding depth and variety to the story your photos will tell.
I always recommend bringing at least two outfits for your senior session. Depending on the length of your session and the locations you choose, you can absolutely bring more! Just be sure to chat with your photographer ahead of time to create a plan that allows for outfit changes without feeling rushed.
I make it a point to connect with all of my clients before their session so we’re on the same page, ensuring we capture every pose, outfit, and detail within the time we have together.

3. Choose colors that complement.
When choosing colors for your outfits, it’s important to think about both your location and your skin tone. The goal is to find colors that complement your complexion while still standing out against your background. You don’t want to blend in so much that you disappear, but you also don’t want colors that overpower the setting. The right balance will make you the star of every photo.

Avoid bright neon colors!
Neon colors can be tricky for senior photos. They often clash with other tones and reflect onto your skin, creating unflattering color casts that throw off the overall look of your images. While neon can be fun in the right setting, it’s usually best to save those bold shades for another occasion and stick with more muted tones that photograph beautifully.
What about patterns or prints?
I love patterns! They express character and personality. However, it is important to make sure that your patterns are not too busy. Loud or overly complex designs can become distracting in photos, pulling focus away from you and the beautiful setting you’ve chosen.
Instead, choose patterns that enhance your look without overpowering it.
I always recommend avoiding logos, band tees, or shirts with printed words. These can be distracting in photos, and sayings, bands, and brands tend to go out of style quickly. While they might feel meaningful right now, you may look back years from today and wish you had chosen something more timeless that reflects not just who you are now but also aligns with the person you’re becoming.
When selecting outfits for your senior photo session, aim for timeless and classic pieces rather than chasing trendy, fast-fading styles.
I always discuss outfit ideas with my clients beforehand, so you know exactly what to pick out for unique, personalized photos you’ll love forever. Don’t be afraid to pick your photographer’s brain! I love helping my senior girls plan and accessorize.

4. Add accessories and use props to create personalized flair.
Be sure to keep in mind the things you love! Personal touches are what make your photos truly unique and help your personality shine through.
Are you a musician? Bring your instrument and let it be part of your story.
Do you love to read? Pack your favorite reads to feature in your session.
Do you play sports? Wear your uniform and we’ll capture you in action on the court, track, or field.
Your options are endless!
Showcase your favorite necklace or earrings.
Wear a floppy hat or add a scarf.
Choose a long, flowy dress to twirl around in an action shot.
We can head out to the farm for photos with your horse or to the racetrack to photograph you next to your racecar.
These personal details don’t just make your photos more meaningful. They showcase the passions and hobbies that are a true part of who you are. Whatever your interests or style may be, my goal is to capture your story in a way that feels both beautiful and authentically you.
How to Pose Naturally During Your Senior Photo Session to Avoid Feeling Awkward

Good news! You don’t need to be a posing expert to look amazing in your photos. Almost everyone tells me, “I never know what to do with my hands,” and that’s completely normal. Posing can most definitely feel awkward if you’ve never done it before.
That’s why I guide all my clients through natural, flattering poses during their entire session, so you’ll never be left wondering what to do to naturally look your best.
That said, here are a few simple posing tips to keep in mind before your senior photo session.
They’ll give you a better idea of what to expect, and if you want, you can even practice a little beforehand. After all, practice makes perfect!

1. Photography is ALL about angles.
The right angles can make all the difference in your photos. Poses shot straight on often look flat and lack personality.
Instead, try turning your body slightly away from the camera while keeping your face toward it.
Add dimension by leaning forward a bit from the waist, shifting your weight to one leg, and popping your hip.
And don’t forget about your expression! Keep your eyes soft and your face relaxed to achieve a natural, effortless look.
For a little extra personality, try tilting your head slightly to the side. This adds subtle character and charm to your photos.

2. Hand placement matters.
Your hand placement says a lot in photos. Stiff, straight hands can signal discomfort instead of confidence, and that’s exactly what we want to avoid.
The good news?
Relaxed, natural hand placement is easier than you think!
Here are a few simple tips to help your hands look effortless and confident, giving you carefree senior photos you’ll absolutely LOVE!
– Remember to keep your hands soft and relaxed. Whether they’re resting by your side, touching your hair, or holding onto something, aim for a light, gentle touch. It always looks more natural on camera.
– Think curves, not straight lines. Our bodies naturally have soft curves, and forcing stiff, straight lines can make poses look unnatural. Adding gentle bends, particularly with your hands, creates a more relaxed, flattering look.
– Give your hands something to do! Try resting one on your hip, holding onto a floppy hat, or gently running your fingers through your hair. These simple, everyday movements feel natural and effortless, and that’s exactly how they’ll look in your photos.
3. Remember to trust the process and enjoy yourself!
I’m here to help! With over twelve years of photography experience, I know how to guide poses that flatter every body type and fit every personality.
Throughout your photo session, I’ll walk you through each step so you’ll never feel awkward or unsure. Together, we’ll create natural, effortless shots that are not only flattering but also fun!

Choosing a Unique & Meaningful Location to tell your Unique story

Your senior photo session is all about you. It should tell your story beautifully and authentically from start to finish, and your background location can add a lot to the story being told in your photos.
When choosing a location, think about who you are and what matters most to you. Again, the right backdrop isn’t just scenery. It’s part of your story, so think outside the box for a truly unique and personalized senior photo session experience.
Do you farm with your grandfather? Let’s head to the farm.
Does your family have a cabin by the lake you adore? We can capture that memory there.
Are you a dancer? Let’s photograph you in the studio where your passion shines.
When you choose a meaningful location, your photos become more than portraits. Instead, they become a true reflection of who you are and the legacy you’re building, creating images you’ll feel deeply connected to for years to come.

How to feel Confident and Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Even with all the preparation, it’s completely normal to feel a little nervous when your senior photo session begins, and that’s okay!
The good news is, there are simple ways to shake off those extra jitters to feel your absolute best.
Here are a few other things to keep in mind for your senior photo session:
– Bring support. Invite a sibling or your best friend to tag along. A familiar face always helps ease nerves, plus gives you quality time together as you make lasting memories.
– Communicate openly with your photographer. Have an idea or inspiration? Share it! Collaboration makes your session more fun and personal. I am here for you, and I’d love to hear your ideas! Pin a few ideas beforehand and send me your list of poses you’d like to incorporate into your photo session.
– Be sure to take your time. Everyone is different, so don’t feel rushed or pressured. We’ll move at a pace that feels right for you, so you feel relaxed with zero pressure. I enjoy taking time with my clients to ensure we get every photo you’ve dreamed of.
– Have fun with it! The more you laugh and enjoy yourself, the more natural and relaxed your photos will look. I love what I do, and I am honored to be documenting such a milestone moment for so many of my clients. Let’s enjoy it together!
